Through the Smart Cities Model Projects, the federal government (BMWSB) and KfW fund the sustainable digitalization of cities and regions — around 820 million euros for 73 municipalities so far, as part of an integrated municipal digital strategy.

KRITIS Umbrella Act — resilience on the ground

The KRITIS Umbrella Act transposes the EU directive on the resilience of critical entities (CER) and explicitly concerns municipal infrastructure. It was adopted in 2025 and comes into force in 2026.
