Current status

IWA 14-1/-2 have been withdrawn and replaced by DIN ISO 22343-1/-2; PAS 68 has been withdrawn.

Many ranking sources report this status in an outdated way. Important: existing certifications remain valid — products tested to IWA 14 or PAS 68 may still be used. For new tests and tenders, the ISO 22343 series is the authoritative international reference.

Testing of the barrier
DIN SPEC 91414-1

Testing & classification of the barrier

DIN SPEC 91414-1 governs, in the German-speaking region, how individual vehicle security barriers are tested and classified. At its core is the impact test (crash test), in which a defined vehicle with a specified mass and speed drives into the barrier and its restraint capacity as well as the penetration depth are evaluated.

In addition, the displacement and tamper tests are considered: they demonstrate that the barrier holds its position in operation and cannot be disabled by simple interference. The result is a verifiable classification certificate that forms the demonstrable performance basis for selecting tested barriers.

Planning of protection
DIN SPEC 91414-2

Methodology for planning vehicle access protection

DIN SPEC 91414-2 provides the methodology to plan vehicle access protection for a specific site. It leads from the threat analysis via the threat coefficient to the design of the required protective effect — that is, from the threat to the specifically required protection or impact class per access point. Part 2 thus links the barrier testing from Part 1 with real-world site planning.

This is exactly the planning methodology that Barricadix builds on: the platform automatically translates geodata, approach paths and threat scenarios into a traceable threat coefficient and the design derived from it — documented in an audit-ready vehicle access protection concept.

International norm
DIN ISO 22343-1 / -2

International classification of vehicle security barriers

DIN ISO 22343 is the current international norm for vehicle security barriers. Part 1 (22343-1) governs the performance requirements and test methods, i.e. the classification of the barrier via the impact test. Part 2 (22343-2) covers selection, installation and application — the planning-side implementation at the site.

ISO 22343 supersedes the withdrawn International Workshop Agreements IWA 14-1 and IWA 14-2 and has taken their place. Certificates already issued under IWA 14 or PAS 68 remain valid; for new tests, the ISO 22343 series is the authoritative international reference.

Public-authority guideline
TR Mobile Fahrzeugsperren

Technische Richtlinie Mobile Fahrzeugsperren

The Technische Richtlinie Mobile Fahrzeugsperren (Technical Guideline on Mobile Vehicle Barriers) is the authoritative body of rules in Germany for mobile, temporarily deployable vehicle barriers — for example at events and in a public-authority context. It sets out police procurement requirements and defines the protection classes SK1, SK2 and SK2+.

The classification is based on the vehicle mass and approach speed that a barrier reliably stops. SK2+ denotes the highest protection level for particularly exposed scenarios. The guideline is thus the practical basis for selecting mobile barriers in public spaces.

Withdrawn
PAS 68

PAS 68 — former British specification

PAS 68 (Publicly Available Specification) was the British specification for the impact testing of vehicle security barriers and, for many years, an international de facto standard. It described the classification based on vehicle type, speed and impact angle.

PAS 68 has been withdrawn and superseded by the ISO 22343 series. Products certified to PAS 68 are still on the market, and existing certificates continue to be used in part — for new tenders, however, the current normative reference (DIN ISO 22343, DIN SPEC 91414) should be applied.

Withdrawn
IWA 14-1

IWA 14-1 — former ISO Workshop classification

IWA 14-1 (International Workshop Agreement) was the previously authoritative international specification for impact tests of vehicle security barriers; IWA 14-2 supplemented it with guidance on application and planning. It continued, among other things, the widely used impact classes of the M series (e.g. M30/M40/M50).

IWA 14-1 and IWA 14-2 have been withdrawn and replaced by DIN ISO 22343-1 and -2 respectively. Certificates issued under IWA 14 retain their validity; the current normative reference, however, is ISO 22343.

Classes & key values

Impact and protection classes at a glance.

The protective effect of tested barriers is described via standardized classes. Two nomenclatures for the impact class and the German protection classes for mobile barriers come together here.

K classesK4 · K8 · K12

US nomenclature (ASTM / former DOS): classification via the penetration depth of a defined truck at 30/40/50 mph. Higher number = more absorbed energy.

M classesM30 · M40 · M50

Impact classes from IWA 14 / PAS 68 (today ISO 22343): 30/40/50 mph impact speed of a reference vehicle. M50 corresponds to the highest tested level.

Protection classesSK1 · SK2 · SK2+

From the Technische Richtlinie Mobile Fahrzeugsperren: classification of mobile barriers by vehicle mass and approach speed. SK2+ is the highest protection level.

Higher class values stand for a greater level of absorbed energy — the required class per access point results from the threat analysis in accordance with DIN SPEC 91414-2.

Testing & planning

Not all standards are the same.

The bodies of rules apply at different points: some test and classify the individual barrier, others provide the methodology for planning protection at the site. Anyone issuing a tender needs both levels.

Testing of the barrier

DIN SPEC 91414-1 and DIN ISO 22343-1 classify the individual product via the impact test.

Planning of protection

DIN SPEC 91414-2 and DIN ISO 22343-2 provide the methodology for designing vehicle access protection at the site.

Public-authority procurement

The TR Mobile Fahrzeugsperren defines the protection classes SK1/SK2/SK2+ for temporary, mobile barriers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the standards

Which standards apply to vehicle access protection?

The relevant ones are DIN SPEC 91414-1 (testing of the barrier) and -2 (planning of vehicle access protection), the international DIN ISO 22343-1/-2 for the classification of vehicle security barriers, as well as the Technische Richtlinie Mobile Fahrzeugsperren with the protection classes SK1/SK2/SK2+. IWA 14 and PAS 68 have been withdrawn and superseded by ISO 22343.

What is the difference between DIN SPEC 91414-1 and -2?

Part 1 governs the testing and classification of the individual barrier, i.e. the impact, displacement and tamper test of a specific product. Part 2 provides the methodology for planning vehicle access protection at the site: threat analysis, threat coefficient and the design of the required protection class per access point. Part 1 tests the product, Part 2 plans the protection.

Has IWA 14-1 been replaced by ISO 22343?

Yes. IWA 14-1 and IWA 14-2 have been withdrawn and replaced by DIN ISO 22343-1 and -2 respectively. ISO 22343 is today the authoritative international reference for testing, classification and application of vehicle security barriers. Certificates already issued under IWA 14 remain valid.

Is PAS 68 still valid?

PAS 68 has been withdrawn and superseded by the ISO 22343 series. Products certified to PAS 68 remain on the market and existing certificates continue to be used in part. For new tenders, however, the current normative reference — DIN ISO 22343 and DIN SPEC 91414 — should be used.

What do the protection classes SK1, SK2 and SK2+ mean?

The protection classes originate from the Technische Richtlinie Mobile Fahrzeugsperren and classify mobile vehicle barriers according to the vehicle mass and approach speed that they reliably stop. SK1 covers lower and SK2 higher scenarios; SK2+ is the highest protection level for particularly exposed situations.

Short definitions of individual terms can be found in the Glossary of vehicle access protection; the planning methodology is explained in the vehicle access protection concept.
